Introduction

The automotive sector is witnessing a major transformation with the increased demand for electric vehicles (EVs). According to a report by Niti Aayog, by the end of 2023, more than 40% of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles will be converted into electric vehicles. Studies have also shown that the Indian EV market is expected to grow at 90% CAGR and reach a value of $150 billion by 2030.

With the industry’s exponential growth and focus on driving large-scale innovation come several job opportunities associated with it. As per a report, in the coming years, the EV industry alone will create about five crore job prospects in the country.

In Episode 07 of Career Circles, Anshuman Srivastava, Chief of Customer Success at Taggd, interacted with Pankaj Sonalkar, Chief of the Electric Vehicle Technology Center at Mahindra & Mahindra, and Abhimanyu Sen, Senior General Manager & Head of Human Resources from Mahindra & Mahindra to discuss this changing landscape of the automobile industry and what it means for the job seekers.

Current Job Opportunities in the EV Industry

  • Mechanical Designing

During the interaction, Mr. Abhimanyu mentioned that the growing demand for electric vehicles had skyrocketed the need for automotive designers.

“Design” is not new to the automobile industry. However, when we talk about developing an electric vehicle, the format and parameters of design are completely different from ICE vehicles.

Mechanical designers in the EV industry require a unique set of skills to design electric vehicle engines, battery packs, motor controllers, etc. It requires continuous collaboration between mechanical and electrical engineers. This has increased the demand for professionals who are proficient in AUTOSAR Architecture and Model-Based Systems Applications.

  • Battery Management System

Battery management system is another arena where the EV industry is witnessing a surge of job opportunities. Companies are looking to research different kinds of materials used for designing fuel cells, power systems, and other energy storage devices, opening doors for people from different backgrounds, like chemical engineering, metallurgy engineering, and battery system design.

  • Smart Technologies

Automakers are keen on leveraging smart technologies like artificial intelligence, machine, embedded systems, and IoT to help them analyze data and ensure quality control at every phase of EV production.

Further, studies have found that AI and ML can be used to optimize EV charging speed, which has further enhanced the application range of these technologies in the EV industry, creating several opportunities for computer engineers, software engineers, embedded system developers, and data analysts.

  • Cybersecurity

Electric vehicles are equipped with a number of sensors that are susceptible to cyber threats. Additionally, there have been a few instances in recent years where attackers hacked charging stations to steal sensitive customer information. To avert such damages, EV manufacturers have to rely on professionals working in the cybersecurity space.
