Introduction

Process engineering is a relatively new discipline that focuses on designing, optimizing, and implementing processes that transform raw materials into finished products.

It requires a strong understanding of mathematics and problem-solving skills, and plays a vital role in various industries such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, petrochemical, and many more. With increasing environmental impact awareness and a shift towards the development of sustainable technology, process engineering is witnessing a surge of new job opportunities in a variety of sectors.

In Episode 13 of Career Circles, Neha Bali, Senior Manager- RPO at Taggd, interacted with Ramesh Subramaniam, Director of Chemical Engineering at Honeywell, to discuss the upcoming job opportunities in process engineering.

During the conversation, Mr. Subramaniam said that “Conventionally, process engineering is hardcore technology-based chemical engineering. However, the discipline also has several opportunities for mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation engineers.

Here are some key takeaway points from the discussion for candidates seeking job opportunities in the field of process engineering.

Job Prospects in Process Engineering

  • Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering is one of the core disciplines in process engineering. In the current times, with organizations like Honeywell UOP focusing on developing technologies such as Ecofining and Carbon Capture, the demand for chemical engineers has increased even more.

Chemical engineers have a huge scope in researching and developing new products, processes, and materials that can support sustainable technologies.

Another opportunity for chemical engineers is in sales support. In this role, chemical engineers collaborate with the sales staff to explain the technical aspects of process engineering to clients, understand their requirements, and suggest appropriate solutions.

  • Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineers with expertise in designing and developing equipment and systems are also crucial to process engineering.

They are responsible for developing equipment such as reactors, pumps, and compressors and ensuring that they comply with safety standards and regulations.

Mechanical engineers are also involved in the maintenance and troubleshooting of the equipment.

  • Electrical Engineers

As the demand for automation and digitalization in the manufacturing sector increases, electrical engineers are becoming essential to the process engineering industry. Job opportunities can be found in the deployment of control systems, sensors, and other automation equipment that help optimize the production process.

  • Instrumentation Engineering

Instrumentation engineers are responsible for installing and troubleshooting instrumentation used to measure process parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, etc. The professionals working in this field who also have a good grasp of mathematics and physics to develop new technologies to be used in process engineering are in high demand.

  • Project Management

Process engineering projects involve managing complex tasks in multiple departments within an organization. Thus, “professionals with expertise in handling and delivering modular projects within timelines and budgets are highly valued.”, Mr. Subramaniam added.

They need to be proficient in planning, coordination, and execution of projects, ensuring that they meet quality standards. Project managers in the process engineering domain manage a full-fledged team of engineers, technicians, and other professionals involved in the project. Hence, candidates with strong communication skills and excellent problem-solving abilities are being prioritized by organizations.

  • Legal

Process engineers are required to stay up to date with industry regulations and standards. Lawyers help process engineers understand the intricacies of the law and provide legal guidance when needed. They also assist in negotiations and drafting contracts for projects.

  • Other Job Opportunities

As per Mr. Subramaniam, “There is also life beyond engineering in this field. We need professionals to handle business and administrative functions.

These include roles in human resources (HR), business analysis & consulting, finance & accounting, etc. By taking up one of these roles, you can contribute to the growth of process engineering in a more administrative or operational capacity.

Conclusion

Process engineering is a dynamic field with a diverse range of job opportunities. The demand for professionals with expertise in sustainable technologies, automation, and digital tools is on the rise.
